Prejudice Reveals the Caveman in Us (LiveScience.com)

Like their cavemen ancestors who fought outsiders for land and potential mates, the modern guy still holds such prejudices against "outgroups," new research shows.

Whereas men's prejudicial views towards outgroup males are often motivated by aggression, women's biases stem from fear, and these different psychologies evolved from our history of group conflict, the researchers said.

That's the basic premise of the so-called "male warrior hypothesis," formulated by Carlos Navarrete, a psychologist at Michigan State University, and his colleagues. To come to their conclusions, the researchers analyzed the breadth of social science literature on intergroup biases, group conflict and sexual selection.

They found that men and women played vastly different roles in past group conflicts, and these differing positions led to their distinctive psychologies today.

Men are from Mars

From small-scale raiding of hunter-gatherer societies to all-out warfare between nation states, human history is wrought with violent clashes between differing groups. "This group conflict is primarily perpetrated by men, who see other men as competition and build up a psychology of aggression against them," Navarrete told LiveScience. [The History of Human Aggression]

In the past, attacking other groups allowed men to gain access to territory, land, status and potential mates. This hostility against "outgroups" is still present in men today: Studies have shown that men are generally more xenophobic?than women, and they are more likely than women to dehumanize members of other groups, such as by describing them as animals, the researchers found.

At the same time, men identify more strongly and cooperate better with men in their own group than do women. In one reviewed experiment, men were more likely than women to put aside selfish motivations in a public goods game ? which involved donating money to a group fund or keeping it to themselves ? when the success of their group was at stake. This tendency is also tied to history, as men needed to cooperate within their group to conduct a successful raid, the researchers say.

Given that chimpanzees, one of our closest genetic relatives, form aggressive male coalitions to conduct border patrols, the researchers propose that these violent behaviors against outgroups were likely shared by a common ancestor.

Women are from Venus

Women, being a prime target of raiding men, have developed a fear of strangers to protect themselves from sexual coercion?and their offspring from infanticide.

In a previous study, Navarrete found that white women evaluated black men differently depending on where they were in their menstrual cycle; they rated the men most negatively, in terms of attractiveness and scariness, when they were most likely to conceive.?Other studies found that, regardless of race, women view physically formidable men more negatively than weaker-looking men. Taken together, the researchers suggest that women may instinctually avoid people who pose the greatest reproductive threat ? formidable outgroup males.

But women's fear-born prejudices don't lead to wars, Navarrete noted. "There have never been any bands of women that group together to raid and kill other women," he said.

Minimizing war

David Geary, a psychologist at the University of Missouri who was not involved in the study, said he agrees with the male warrior hypothesis, having outlined a very similar idea in his book, "Male, Female: The Evolution of Human Sex Difference" (American Psychological Association, 1998).

"[The new study] is getting at some of the details of male cooperation and competition, and supporting the ideas with a little more fine-grain experimental studies," Geary told LiveScience. But these conclusions should not be taken to mean that all war falls on the shoulders of the male sex drive, Geary said.

"Certainly the male reproductive drive contributes to more intense competitions, which can, under some conditions, express as physical violence," Geary said. "But in other conditions, it can be a competition for the best new marketing idea, or the best new computing chip."

Navarrete said he thinks that the hypothesis has clear implications for minimizing war. For one, he said, "women getting political power?and being decision-makers would be helpful."

Another idea Navarrete proposed for decreasing wars would be to eliminate "outgroups" by bringing about a shared identity across the globe. "Then the only outgroup would be aliens," he said.

The research was published Jan. 24 in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.

(AP) ? Egyptian security forces on Saturday fired tear gas from armored trucks at protesters demanding an end to military rule, as anger over a deadly soccer riot fueled a third day of clashes that have killed at least 12 people.

The violence followed a melee and stampede after a soccer match Wednesday in the Mediterranean city of Port Said in which 74 people died in the world's worst soccer violence in 15 years. Protesters accuse the security forces of failing to prevent the bloodshed.

After two days of running street battles, clashes broke out again in downtown Cairo Saturday as demonstrators marched on the Interior Ministry. Security forces fired volleys of tear gas at rock-throwing protesters calling for the army to relinquish power. The ministry has been a frequent target for the protesters because it is responsible for the widely distrusted police.

In a bid to end the violence, a group of lawmakers and public figures said they met with Interior Ministry officials to try to negotiate a cease-fire. But security forces disregarded a plan to hold their fire, and lobbed tear gas and fired birdshot on a group of mediators attempting to convince protesters to clear a street leading to the ministry.

"The continued clashes are a way for the ministry to distract attention from the real demands for the military leaders to step down," said Bassem Kamel, a lawmaker who tried to negotiate the truce.

"We know the protesters aren't angels and come with a lot of anger from what happened in Port Said, but it has made people want to stand up to the military rulers," he added.

Some of the protesters themselves urged for an end to the violence and called on people to leave the Interior Ministry area.

"If you love Egypt, return to the (Tahrir) square," chanted protesters along the side streets of the ministry on Saturday.

Police cordoned off several streets with lines of riot police and barbed wire, pushing protesters further back from the ministry.

Rights groups and several newly elected members of parliament have called on the country's military leader, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who served as President Hosni Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years and took power after Mubarak's ouster last February, to immediately transfer of power to a civilian administration.

Egyptian presidential hopeful and ex-Arab League chief Amr Moussa echoed those calls Saturday, saying the situation in the country was "very frightening" and that the military needed to open up presidential campaigning in March and step down in favor of civilian authorities by April 30.

"The time has come to transfer power to a civilian administration which will promote stability and the achievement of the revolutionary goals," Moussa said in a statement carried by the state-run news agency, MENA.

Some of the worst violence in the latest unrest has been in the port city of Suez, where protesters set up cordons outside the police headquarters to ban people from demonstrating around it and keep the calm.

On Friday, security forces in Suez opened fire on a crowd of several thousand outside the police headquarters. A total of seven people were killed, a police official said Saturday. Egypt's state-new agency MENA reported the victims ranged in age between 18 and 21, and that the most recent victim died of a gunshot wound Saturday that he sustained the previous day.

By Saturday morning, five protesters were also reported dead in Cairo after security forces fired tear gas and birdshot. The death toll was provided by the security official and a volunteer doctor.

Abdolheliem Mahmoud, the doctor at a field hospital in Tahrir Square, said the latest victims died Saturday from birdshot to the head or chest in overnight clashes. Another protester was in critical condition, he said.

Field hospitals were set up in streets near the Interior Ministry to assist hundreds of cases of suffocation from tear gas inhalation on Friday.

The Health Ministry said Saturday that 2,500 people have been injured since the violence began on Thursday.

Also, a security officer died after an armored police vehicle ran him over in the mayhem outside the ministry Friday, the security official said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with police regulations.

The riot after the soccer match in Port Said has shocked Egyptians.

There have been accusations that plainclothes officers took part in the melee, and some have alleged that riot police intentionally allowed the bloodshed at the stadium to happen to retaliate against die-hard soccer fans of the visiting team Al-Ahly, known as Ultras, who played a key role in clashes with security forces during the uprising that toppled Mubarak.

Lawmakers have accused the interior minister of "negligence."

The violence in Port Said began after home team Al-Masry pulled off a 3-1 upset win over Cairo's Al-Ahly, Egypt's most powerful club. Al-Masry fans stormed the field, rushing past lines of police to attack Al-Ahly fans.

Survivors have said police stood by doing nothing as Al-Masry fans attacked Al-Ahly supporters, stabbing them, undressing them and throwing them off bleachers. Others died from the stampede down a narrow corridor after the stadium's gate, which was locked from the outside, was forced open by the crowd.

Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri said he sacked the Egyptian Soccer Federation's board on Thursday and referred its members for questioning by prosecutors about the violence. To keep in line with international soccer federation guidelines, which do not give el-Ganzouri the right to dissolve the board, its eight members formally submitted their resignations on Saturday.

UConn's Calhoun taking indefinite medical leave

STORRS, Conn. (AP) ? UConn's Jim Calhoun doesn't mince words when it comes to his health.

So, when the Hall of Fame coach of the defending national champions, who turns 70 in May, had just about had it with his back problems, he let people know.

"The bottom line is I'm going to need some work done," Calhoun told The Associated Press in a phone interview Friday. "In January the shooting pains were getting worse and after one plane ride I couldn't even get up. I tried to hide it. I'm taking medicine right now for the pain. They are waiting for things to quiet down, and I'll meet with the doctor next week."

As a result, Calhoun is taking an indefinite medical leave of absence, as he has been suffering for several months from spinal stenosis, a spinal condition that causes him severe pain and hampers mobility.

Calhoun said he told university President Susan Herbst about it but had hoped to gut out the final weeks of the season.

"But it's just so bad, even getting through practice," Calhoun said. "Now I'm going to see what the next step is. The bottom line is I'm hurting."

George Blaney, the team's associate head coach, will lead the team in Calhoun's absence.

He said Calhoun missed practice Thursday and could not get out of bed Friday morning. Blaney said Calhoun began feeling pain in his legs and buttocks during this week's road trip to Georgetown.

"When we got off the plane, he really had trouble getting in the car and going home," he said.

The Huskies (14-7, 4-5 Big East) have lost four games in a row and fell out of the Top 25 for the first time in 28 weeks. They host Seton Hall on Saturday before traveling to Louisville on Monday.

Calhoun has had a history of health problems. He is a three-time cancer survivor, overcoming prostate cancer in 2003 and skin cancer twice, most recently in 2008.

"I had back pain like never before last summer, thought it was back spasms," he said in the phone interview. "I saw a neurologist and he told me about scoliosis, stenosis and other things and that there could be things like a bone spur and that I could probably need something done at some point. I went for the physical therapy and it worked, but it started to lock up sometimes recently and it was worse."

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spine, normally associated with aging and sometimes with arthritis. If physical therapy and medicines aren't effective, surgery may be considered, although some people's symptoms may not improve after an operation.

Calhoun has missed 21 games during his career at UConn, 17 for medical reasons. He has had to leave another 11 games with health problems. His last extended medical leave came in 2010, when he missed seven games with stress-related issues.

He missed three games earlier this season because of NCAA sanctions.

"I don't know anybody tougher," Blaney said. "He doesn't use Novocain when he goes to the dentist. He's a tough guy and usually 'No' spurs him on."

Blaney informed the team of Calhoun's illness just before Friday afternoon's practice.

"We wish we could be there to help him, and he wishes he could be there to help us," said guard Shabazz Napier, a team captain. "Sometimes you have to go on a journey without your captain, and we're going to do whatever we got to do to fulfill his dreams and fulfill ours at the same time."

Napier and forward Alex Oriakhi called a players-only meeting to discuss the team's recent slump.

"It's tough," said freshman center Andre Drummond. "We've had a couple of downfalls, a couple of roadblocks throughout the way, but that's life. That's one of the things you've got to get through. That's what we're doing right now. We're fighting through it and we're not going down without a fight."

Calhoun is No. 6 on the all-time wins list with 867. He has won three national championships at Connecticut and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. He coached the team to its fourth Final Four and third national title last April.

The subject of Calhoun's tenure is not new. He said last month he decided to not retire after last year's national championship in large part because he wanted to see through the NCAA sanctions leveled on him and his program for recruiting violations. The NCAA required Calhoun to sit out wins over South Florida and St. John's and a loss to Seton Hall for violations that included a finding that the coach had failed to maintain "an atmosphere of compliance" in the program.

He told reporters that the idea of bringing closure to that issue was a "major, major factor" in his decision to come back this season.

Connecticut has gone 9-9 in games that Blaney has coached, including 2-1 during Calhoun's recent suspension.

Guard Ryan Boatright, who has missed nine games this season while the NCAA investigated his eligibility, said he thinks the team will rally under Blaney. He said both coaches are able to motivate the team, but their styles are much different.

"There's not as much yelling," he said. "Obviously the cuss words are down to a (lower) level. It's a difference."
