Jon Jones reportedly asked Dana White to tell Chael Sonnen to stop calling him out

Before UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones turned down a fight with Chael Sonnen, the two engaged in a war of words. Sonnen called Jones out, Jones responded with, "If you're going to disrespect me out of nowhere, at least disrespect me to my face like a man. And you call me a punk, I'm more man than you'll ever be," and then Jones said he knew what he was doing all along.

Except, there are reports now that Jones was bothered by Sonnen not only calling out Jones here, but in the many things Sonnen said after Jones turned down their fights. He even reportedly asked UFC president Dana White to tell Sonnen to stop.

This isn't the first time Jones has been oddly bothered by what people have to say about him. After beating Quinton Jackson at UFC 135, the UFC brought Rashad Evans into the cage for the two to face off for their next fight. Jones was so bothered by the sight of his former friend in the cage that he ignored Evans' compliments on how he fought, and said Evans "ruined his night twice." Really? Jones had just beaten a former champion by submission, but the mere sight of Evans ruined what should have been a jubilant evening for him.

When Jones apologized for getting behind the wheel of a car while drunk, he lashed out again at his "haters" who tried to "kick him while he was down." After White announced the cancellation of UFC 151 and lashed out against Jones and his camp, Jones actually unfollowed his boss on Twitter.

For a millionaire professional athlete, Jones has a thin skin. He often appears more concerned with what his detractors think than his supporters.

It's an odd stance for someone of his level to take, because part of the job of being a famous athlete is dealing with people who don't like you. Look at the mentions of Twitter pages or Facebook pages for any pro athlete. They are being blamed for everything from fantasy team losses to ruining a fan's life. San Francisco 49er Kyle Williams received death threats after fumbling in a playoff game. It's not right that anyone should have to deal with such vitriol, but it's part of the fame game.

Jones has the skills, speed, reach, height and fight intelligence to stay at the top of the MMA world for a long, long time. He appears so far above his competition that the only person who can beat him is Jon Jones. Right now, he should be thinking about his fight with Vitor Belfort on Sept. 22, not be worried about what Sonnen has to say.

Marriage as Leadership and Submission ? The League of Ordinary ...

It?s important to read and think about views other than your own, especially if the disagreements are profound:

Many of our young people want to be ?wives and husbands? rather than simply ?partners? and in their weddings they come as ?bride and groom? rather than simply two individuals. They believe that expressing these differences, including different responsibilities, makes for a better marriage?

The biblical teaching is that the promise made voluntarily by the bride to submit to her husband is matched by the even more onerous obligation which the husband must undertake to act towards his wife as Christ has loved the church. The Bible says that this obligation is ultimately measured by the self-sacrifice of Christ in dying on the cross.

This is not an invitation to bossiness, let alone abuse. A husband who uses the wife?s promise in this way stands condemned for betraying his own sworn obligations. The husband is to take responsibility for his wife and family in a Christ-like way. Her ?submission? is her voluntary acceptance of this pattern of living together, her glad recognition that this is what he intends to bring to the marriage and that it is for her good, his good and the good of children born to them. She is going to accept him as a man who has chosen the self-discipline and commitment of marriage for her sake and for their children. At a time when women rightly complain that they cannot get men to commit, here is a pattern which demands real commitment all the way.

Secular views of marriage are driven by a destructive individualism and libertarianism. This philosophy is inconsistent with the reality of long-term relationships such as marriage and family life.

Referring to ?partners? rather than husband or wife gives no special challenge to the man to demonstrate the masculine qualities which he brings to a marriage.

Men have to accept the limitations imposed by a commitment to marry. Both husband and wife must exercise self-control and the acceptance of boundaries, although in ways which are somewhat distinctive. My greatest interest in the draft service the diocese has prepared is the high standard being proposed for men.

Christian conservatives in the United States often say that marriage must be between a man and a woman, simply as a matter of definition. What they really mean is something much more like the above, I think. To reduce the argument to a sound bite?as they have done?begs the question.

The above is not question-begging, however. It posits that a proper marriage necessarily entails a promise of leadership and submission, with a man and a woman respectively taking those roles. It?s interesting in part because it also relegates the question of children to its proper place: Children are a good thing that might come from a marriage, but the marriage is here said to be complete once there is a promise of leadership and submission, from a man and a woman, regardless of whether children are present.

That?s an empirical claim, and even apart from the Bible, it?s based on centuries of tradition. It?s thus a lot harder to refute. We may find it repugnant as a prescriptive claim for our own society, and I do. But demonstrating why it?s wrong requires more than an elementary course in logic.

Charity toward Christian conservatives would demand that we ignore the sound bite version and engage with the above. Or would it not?

Festival des Films du Monde: Coming back to the war

MONTREAL - The other day, Volker Schl?ndorff was trying to explain to his 20-year-old daughter why he keeps revisiting the Third Reich in his movies. Best known for The Tin Drum, his adaptation of G?nther Grass?s novel that got the Oscar for best foreign-language film in 1979, the veteran German director returned to the subject of Nazis and the Second World War in 1996 with The Ogre (starring John Malkovich) and again in 2004 with The Ninth Day, about a priest at Dachau.

His latest war movie is Calm at Sea (La mer ? l?aube), a 90-minute drama he made for French TV about the reprisal murder of 48 young Communist prisoners in occupied France in October 1941. Seen by over 1.7 million people in France and Germany when it aired last spring, the telefilm is being screened at the Festival des films du monde; Schl?ndorff flew in from Berlin to present it Tuesday and give a ?master class? to fans; it screens again Wednesday and Thursday.

And there?s more Krieg to come. As Schl?ndorff revealed in a long conversation we had Monday after he and his wife, Angelica, checked into their hotel in Old Montreal, the director plans to start shooting another war drama next spring. It?s a feature film called Diplomacy, adapted from the French play by Cyril Gely, about the Germans? final days in Paris in August 1944, when army general Dietrich von Choltitz surrendered rather than disobey Hitler?s orders to dynamite the city.

?I tried to explain to my daughter why I find all this (Third Reich history) interesting, and of course the first reason is that it happened to my generation,? said Schl?ndorff, 73, who was born in Wiesbaden on March 31, 1939. ?If this had been some Roman war, or Alexander (the Great) in Asia, I might be just as interested, but since it happened to us it just hits a bit closer to home.

?The Second World War isn?t just something you can analyze historically or depict precisely. It?s also a field where you can explore extreme human situations, where you can explore evil,? Schl?ndorff continued. ?I think people?s interest in it will survive for a long, long time. And hopefully (interest in that war) won?t be replaced by another one.?

It still amazes him: ?How can the Nazis have done all that in 12 years? How was it all possible??

The moral choices people make in wartime or in a military environment have long fascinated Schl?ndorff, who began his career in France in the early 1960s as assistant director to filmmakers Louis Malle (on classics like Zazie dans le m?tro and Le feu follet), Alain Resnais (L?ann?e derni?re ? Marienbad) and Jean-Pierre Melville (L?on Morin, pr?tre). His own feature debut as a director, Young T?rless, in 1966, was set in an Austrian military academy in the early 1900s.

That film was an early benchmark of the New German Cinema movement, which he helped establish with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog and others. Schl?ndorff scored again with the 1975 terrorism drama The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (his first box-office hit, written and directed with his first wife, Margarethe von Trotta) and their 1976 follow-up, Coup de Gr?ce, about an aristocratic woman?s dalliance with Prussian soldiers in Latvia in 1919.

Schl?ndorff?s international fame peaked in 1979 with The Tin Drum, followed in 1981 by Circle of Deceit, shot in Lebanon with Bruno Ganz as a war correspondent. Schl?ndorff went on to work in Hollywood (Swann in Love, The Handmaid?s Tale, Voyager), adapted plays for TV (including Arthur Miller?s Death of a Salesman, starring Malkovich and Dustin Hoffman), staged operas (by Janacek, Henze and, most recently, Bizet), and, in a long break from filmmaking, ran the fabled Babelsberg Studio for six years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In between, he completed a pet project: a three-hour interview with his idol, legendary filmmaker Billy Wilder. First aired on BBC TV in 1992, it?s included as a bonus on the new British Blu-ray of Wilder?s 1945 drama The Lost Weekend; the disc is part of Eureka! Entertainment?s Masters of Cinema series. Schl?ndorff is travelling with a copy to give to a friend in New York, which he and his wife will visit after Montreal. His next film, Montauk, a modern adaptation of the 1975 novel by Swiss writer Max Frisch, is set there.

As someone who knew both Wilder and Miller, in the mid-1980s, Schl?ndorff is often asked what he knows ?from the inside? about Marilyn Monroe, who was Miller?s wife and Wilder?s star in the classic comedy Some Like it Hot. ?It was sometimes embarassing for me, going between the TV play with Miller and meeting Wilder in Hollywood: each would take me as his confidante and I?d get both sides of the story,? Schl?ndorff recalled.

?Arthur was still very resentful and said that Billy treated her badly and was so ruthless, and that?s why she lost her baby (when shooting wrapped in late 1958). And Billy said, ?How could I know she was pregnant? She didn?t tell anybody, and I?m not a nurse. We had a deal that she had to make a movie, and had I known (she was expecting) we couldn?t have done it, because no insurance would have covered her.? It must have been a nightmarish situation for all of them.?

A short, dapper man with rimless glasses and a moustache, a weakness for smoking cigarillos (despite having run many marathons), a big jade ring he bought from a Jewish jeweller in Tehran, and a deliberate, rather professorial way of speaking that?s punctuated by wry laughter, Schl?ndorff recounted that anecdote and many others in the hour we had at his hotel. Fighting jet lag, he and his wife later showed up for a late-night Goethe Institut cocktail reception for the many other German filmmakers who are at the fest (three have films in world competition).

Schl?ndorff has been coming here for years, since the very first days of the fest in the mid-1970s, when founding president Serge Losique used to take him jogging on Mount Royal. As a francophile, he feels at home in Montreal but finds he hears more and more English in the streets every time he comes. He?s never shot a film here, though Margaret Atwood tempted him to do so for his adaptation of The Handmaid?s Tale in 1990 (he chose the leafy campus of North Carolina?s Duke University instead).

In another little-known Canadian connection, he once had an aunt who lived in Calgary (a doctor, she had to settle for a career as a nurse after she immigrated), but she?s dead now and he no longer visits. Approaching old age himself, he doesn?t lack energy ? in fact, he says he?s glad to be free of ?distractions? that keep him from making movies, whether they be low-budget ones for huge TV audiences like Calm at Sea, or big-budget ones for the cinema that are seen by ?a few thousand people? at film fests.

His best work is widely available on DVD. The premium art-house movie distributor Criterion is preparing to re-release The Tin Drum with an extra 25 minutes of footage restored, bringing the movie to its original intended length (in the script and as shot and edited) of almost two hours and 45 minutes. Criterion wants Schl?ndorff to do a new audio commentary for the film, but he?d rather do an on-camera interview; he?s never liked the ?voice of God? format of commentary tracks.

?I?m basically bored by everything except filmmaking, or working with actors, doing plays, movies, and operas; I do documentaries, as well ? anything where I can tell stories,? Schl?ndorff said.

?At my age, I?m back to the old fashion of the showbiz professional. You can send me anywhere and I can wage any battle.?

La mer ? l?aube (Calm at Sea) screens again Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. and Thursday at 2:20 p.m. at Quartier Latin, 350 Emery (just west of St. Denis St. The 90-minute telefilm is in French and German with English subtitles.Tickets: $10. Info: ffm-montreal.org

Stewart isn't expecting any issues with Kenseth

Fans watch the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, in Bristol, Tenn. (AP Photo/Mark Humphrey)

(AP) ? Tony Stewart joked Tuesday that his two-handed toss of his helmet at Matt Kenseth was "not bad for a 41-year-old who doesn't work out."

Aside from that, Stewart said he's not expecting any drama between the two drivers despite promising to run over Kenseth every chance he gets this season.

"You get over that stuff. It's been part of racing for as long as I can remember and that won't be the last time you see two drivers have a disagreement," Stewart said, adding he'll only run over Kenseth "if I need to. It's not our intention to go seek him out.

"We've gotten along more races than we've disagreed."

The three-time NASCAR champion lost his infamous temper Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway after contact with Kenseth caused him to wreck as they were racing for the lead. Before making his mandatory trip to the care center, Stewart waited on the track for Kenseth to pass by on pit road, and he heaved his helmet directly at the front grill of Kenseth's car.

He was able to joke about the helmet throw during an event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He noted the throw was unorthodox but said using two hands gave him more velocity, and he may take some of his father's old helmets into his yard to practice his technique.

"It may happen again ? I've got a lot of helmets and a lot of races," said Stewart, who was pleased NASCAR has not fined him. "I figured I was going to get some kind of penalty for it, so it's nice to know that's something you can get away with. I just wish we could get a more lengthy list of what we can do and can't do. I think we could make it a lot more entertaining if we knew what we could do."

Kenseth said he doesn't plan to watch his back, but he did say during tire testing at Kansas Speedway on Tuesday that he'll talk to Stewart the next time they see each other.

"Tony and I have raced together for a really long time," Kenseth said. "You're going to have problems here and there. Most of the time it's not one person's fault. We're going to move on."

Kenseth had indicated after the race that there's a lingering issue between the two after incidents at Sonoma in June and Indianapolis in July, and he said Stewart refused to speak to him after their Indy disagreement.

"People aren't going to see things the same way. If they did there wouldn't be as many wrecks," Kenseth said. "He's shown me a lot of respect on the track and I think I've given him the same respect back. ... I think at the end of the day, we'll get it all worked out."

Stewart said the two did exchange text messages, and that they've raced each other long enough to not let anything harm their respect for each other. Kenseth is also a NASCAR champion and has two Daytona 500 wins.

"It's not a big drama," Stewart said. "We both have been through this before, we know what we expect out of each other and we'll go on to the weekend like we always do. We've been racing each other for 15 years. It's not like we've not been through this before."

Stewart said he wasn't proud of his behavior at Bristol, which had been criticized by fans who felt the racing there had become too boring since progressive banking was added. Track owner Bruton Smith ground down the top lane before Saturday night's race in an effort to return the bumping-and-banging style that created some of the best driver disagreements in NASCAR.

"I don't enjoy getting mad like that," Stewart said. "It doesn't make my day. I wasn't happy when I did it. I wasn't happy when it was over. I wasn't happy when I got home."

Stewart's good mood Tuesday was aided by the Mobil 1 event, which was a "Choose Tony's Ride" program that allowed fans to vote on what kind of vehicle Stewart should drive in an exhibition around the road course at Charlotte. Vehicles were narrowed down to a WWII-era tank, a Chevrolet Astro van, a Formula Drift Camaro and a Chevy Corvette Grand Sport.

Although the drifter won, Stewart also drove the van and the tank. He couldn't hide his enthusiasm for both ? the drifter took him three laps to figure out how to get through one particular tricky turn.

He had driven a tank before, but never a drifter, and said he loved the experience. But he also said there's still something out there he wants to drive.

"I still want to drive a top fuel car," Stewart said. "That's the next thing on the bucket list now. It's the only thing I haven't driven that I want to drive more than anything."

Zyxel Wireless N300 Range Extender WRE2205

Zyxel's Wireless N300 Range Extender WRE2205 solves the problem of dead zones in a wireless network by expanding the network coverage well beyond what the router can deliver. While the WRE2205 is pretty basic and doesn't offer very many features, it does support MAC address filtering, wireless output power management, and a universal repeater mode. There are some quirks in the interface, but it's overall a solid device capable of extending network coverage beyond 100 feet.

Priced at $59.95, the N300 Range Extender doesn't break the bank, and the price tag is middle of the pack compared to that of other competitors, such as Netgear's Universal WiFi Range Extender WN2000RPT ($60, street, Cisco Linksys Wireless-N Range/Extender Bridge RE1000 ($50-$80, street) , and BearExtender's PC Long Range 802.11n ISB WiFi Booster ($44.97).

Specs and Design
The WRE2205 resembles a power adapter and plugs directly into the electrical outlet. The palm-sized device has a power switch and an Ethernet port on the sides. There is a button to turn on Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) on the front face of the adapter, along with four LED indicators for signal strength, wireless, power, and Ethernet. The adapter measures 1.81 inches x 1.59 inches x 2.87 inches (HWD) and weighs a mere 0.18 pounds.

The compact design means it can be deployed practically anywhere and is unobtrusive enough that people would easily overlook it. There are two-dBi internal antennae inside the extender, which is capable of transmitting and receiving data up to 300 Mbps, according to the specifications. The WRE2205 also supports 64-bit and 128-bit WEP, WPA-PSK, and WPA2-PSK security. Zyxel's wireless extender works on the 802.11n band but also offers backwards compatibility for 802.11b/g devices. However it only works on the 2.4 GHz band, unlike the current Editors' Choice Amped Wireless' High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Repeater , which has dual-band capabilities.

Setup
The WRE2205 ships with a CD that contains documentation and a paper "quick install" guide. I had a choice of using the automatic or manual process for configuring the extender. For the purposes of this review, I tried the manual process, since it actually looked easier than the automatic method.

The manual instructions were very straightforward, as all I had to do was connect the device to the computer via an Ethernet cable and then browse to a Web-based interface. From there, I ran the setup wizard which collected the necessary information and scanned the environment for existing networks nearby. The wizard lists the names of all the wireless networks detected, along with encryption levels and signal strength.

The setup wizard is easy to follow, but the instructions and error messages are full of poorly written English. While the meaning is fairly understandable, the poor grammar is distracting.

I ran into one significant problem while trying to set up the WRE2205: I couldn't get onto my secured wireless network. The extender kept rejecting my security key despite my entering it correctly. I tried manually configuring the SSID instead of letting the wizard scan for nearby networks, and still couldn't figure out the problem. I had no trouble connecting to a non-secured network.

It turned out to be a firmware bug preventing the device from connecting to wireless routers running older WPA-PSK security. I was able to finally connect the extender to a secured network after I upgraded the firmware. The only reason I knew I had to upgrade was because Zyxel representatives emailed me to tell me about the issue. There is nothing in the troubleshooting documents, within the interface, or on online support to suggest to regular users they should look for new firmware, and I doubt the average user will get a personal email from Zyxel like I did. I foresee many users spending a lot of time scratching their heads and trying to figure out what is wrong with their network.

Another quirk in the interface came whenever I hit the Back button to see an earlier screen within the wizard and the "next" button would disappear. I had to repeatedly close the wizard and start all over again. While it wasn't a major issue, it was yet another frustrating moment trying to set up.

SPIN METER: Debt clock has dual message

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? As Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus gaveled the party's convention to order Monday, he also set in motion a debt clock, a theatrical flourish designed to remind Americans just how rapidly the government's tide of red ink is mounting under President Barack Obama.

It may also be an unintended reminder that the GOP's presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, has yet to say in any detail what he would do about it.

The clock Priebus started on Monday is totaling debt the government accumulates during the convention.

A second debt clock, which started running earlier, displays the total national debt, which now stands at $15.9 trillion. Priebus vowed that on Romney's first day in office, the new president would "take immediate action to cut federal spending and bring the debt under control."

So far in the campaign, Romney has promised to cut income tax rates across the board, including for the wealthiest households. He says he would pay for the cuts by eliminating unspecified deductions, but many like the break for home mortgage interest are so popular that it is hard to see how he would keep the tax reductions from adding to the red ink.

He wants to boost Pentagon spending ? another move that would make the debt problem worse. He also promises to protect current Social Security and Medicare recipients from cuts.

Romney says he would reduce the deficit by capping federal spending ? now at 23.5 percent of U.S. economy ? at 20 percent by the end of his first term in January 2017. But to make that math work would require deeper cuts in federal programs than Congress is likely to go along with.

With defense spending off limits, such reductions could mean slashing health care for the poor and disabled and huge cuts to programs like homeland security, air traffic control, law enforcement, food inspection, national parks and highways. Throughout nearly a year of campaigning, Romney has avoided saying what he'd cut.

EDITOR'S NOTE _ An occasional look behind the rhetoric of the political campaign.

What is diabetes type 1.5? - Health Niche

In the year 2000, the World Health Organization WHO reckoned that 171 million people all over the world were suffering from diabetes. Experts predict that by the year 2030, there will be approximately 366 million people affected by the disease. Diabetes belongs to a group of metabolic diseases leading to a high and life-threatening blood sugar. Most popularly, the defect is divided into two subcategories: diabetes type one and diabetes type two. Whereas type one is caused by a failure to produce the hormone insulin and often occurs at an early age, type two results from an insulin resistance developing with age. However, there is also an in-between type which has been coined diabetes type 1.5 and which is also known as LADA, i.e. Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults.

LADA: How come?

The in-between type is described as a condition in which diabetes type one develops in an adult age. That is due to the fact that the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells can occur at different rates. If it happens fast, it leads to symptoms at an early age (type one), if it happens slowly, it leads to problems at a later age (LADA). In order to test an emerging diabetes type one, and to avoid a misdiagnosis of type two which also happens at an adult age, it is necessary to conduct antibody tests. People suffering from LADA can show a positive reaction to the antibodies test, people suffering from type two are unlikely to do so. Laboratories own ELISA kits for scientific research in order to get the results.

Avoiding a misdiagnosis

It is estimated that 20 percent of the people officially suffering from diabetes type two actually suffer from type 1.5. In order to optimize the treatment of these people, which does not in every case require an insulin therapy but might also be managed through changes in nutrition and lifestyle, antibody tests should be conducted more than once as it may track the progression of the disease. How far medical research has developed can be seen in the huge amounts of antibody test applications offered at www.antibodies-online.com/.

Cuba campaign takes on 'free' health care

Cuba's system of free medical care, long considered a birthright by its citizens and trumpeted as one of the communist government's great successes, is not immune to cutbacks under Raul Castro's drive for efficiency.

The health sector has already endured millions of dollars in budget cuts and tens of thousands of layoffs, and it became clear this month that Castro is looking for more ways to save when the newspaper voice of the Communist Party, Granma, published daily details for two weeks on how much the government spends on everything from anesthetics and acupuncture to orthodontics and organ transplants.

It's part of a wider media campaign that seems geared to discourage frivolous use of medical services, to explain or blunt fears of a drop-off in care and to remind Cubans to be grateful that health care is still free despite persistent economic woes. But it's also raising the eyebrows of outside analysts, who predict further cuts or significant changes to what has been a pillar of the socialist system implanted after the 1959 revolution.

"Very often the media has been a leading indicator of where the economic reforms are going," said Phil Peters, a longtime Cuba observer at the Lexington Institute think tank. "My guess is that there's some kind of policy statement to follow, because that's been the pattern."

The theme of the Granma pieces, posters in clinics and ads on state TV is the same: "Your health care is free, but how much does it cost?"

The answer is, not much by outside standards, but quite a bit for Cuba, which spends $190 million a year paying for its citizens' medical bills.

Based on the official exchange rate, the government spends $2 each time a Cuban visits a family doctor, $4.14 for each X-ray and $6,827 for a heart transplant.

It's not a luxury service though. Scarcities now are common and sanitary conditions fall short of the ideal in decaying facilities where paint peels from the walls. Patients often bring their own bed sheets, electric fans, food and water for hospital stays.

One Havana-based clinical physician applauded the campaign, saying it targets a pervasive problem: Conditioned to think about health as an inalienable right, many Cubans rush to the hospital whenever they come down with a cough or the sniffles, demand expensive tests before they've even been examined and sometimes get aggressive if doctors refuse.

"Respect for doctors has entirely been lost," he said. "Some will indulge a patient for fear of how they might react."

The physician spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss health care with a foreign journalist. Interview requests were not granted by the Health Ministry, though a spokeswoman said in a brief email response that the costs in Granma were the result of careful study.

  1. Don't miss these Health stories

    1. How your computer is making you fat

It's common sense that sitting in front of computer and TV screens is making people fatter. A study out this week puts some precise numbers on it, though ? and finds a surprisingly steady pattern across rich and poor countries.

    2. Tap water in neti pots linked to 'brain-eating amoeba' deaths
    3. FDA IDs farm in salmonella cantaloupe scare
    4. Banish brain freeze: New study shows how
    5. When choosing salad dressing sparks anxiety spiral

The fact that the figures were published at all suggests a sea change in conceptions about health care, said Nancy Burke, director of the Cuba Program in Health Diplomacy at the University of California, San Francisco.

"It's interesting that the health care system, which has always been touted as a basic human right, is now being put into market terms," said Burke, a medical anthropologist who makes yearly research trips to Cuba. "That says so much about Raul's market reforms and the ideology ... informing that. It's a real shift, a major shift in the way of thinking about health care."

She noted that the island's doctors are increasingly cash cows for Cuba as it sends them abroad to treat the poor in countries such as Venezuela. The international missions fulfill a humanitarian purpose but also offset a significant share of the $28.5 billion in cash and subsidized oil that the South American nation has sent Cuba since 2005, according to Venezuelan opposition lawmaker Julio Borges, who says he uses public records to track the figure.

To cut costs in Cuba, state media have urged doctors to use their "clinical eye" before ordering pricey lab tests, and target the practice of people stockpiling medicine to carry them through shortages.

In one TV spot, a woman visits a doctor and requests a long list of pills. Asked why she needs so many, she replies: "Oh, doctor, it's for my personal stash."

"I stop cold when I see that, not knowing whether to laugh or cry," blogger Greter Torres Vazquez wrote on a Cuban youth-issues website. "Maybe they've never had the experience of going to the pharmacy and asking for medicine that their aunt, their grandmother, their mother needs urgently, only for the worker to say 'Sorry, we ran out five minutes ago.'"

Some seized on the campaign to complain about corruption in hospitals.

"They should also publish the miserable salary that doctors get paid; that's an embarrassment," said Maria Soto, a 62-year-old Havana resident. "And it's serious, because it leads to the problems everyone knows about: You get bad service or, even worse, they charge you under the table."

Cuban authorities continuously brag about keeping health care free and universal despite its lightweight economy and the 50-year-old U.S. embargo.

Experts credit the government's emphasis on prevention and doctor-patient relationships for life expectancy and infant mortality rates that are on par with those of wealthy nations. Medical schools churn out huge graduating classes; every last one of Cuba's 11 million citizens is supposed to get a house call at least once a year.

Charging for care would be a dramatic and unlikely about-face, but with 15 percent of the budget devoted to health, Havana sees no choice but to make the system more efficient wherever it can.

After steadily rising over five decades to hit $206 million in 2009, health spending has dropped, slipping to $190 million last year, according to government figures. Officials hint at more cuts to come.

These days, authorities rail against "irrational expenses" and have slashed more than 50,000 less-skilled health-sector jobs, singling out overstaffed clinics and ambulances with multiple drivers.

Some Cubans say hospital wait times seem to be on the rise and medicine, equipment and soap are increasingly in short supply.

The clinical doctor consulted by the AP said neither scarcity nor complaints have worsened, though doctors still suffer heavy case loads and low pay, about $25 a month.

Cuba is walking a delicate line on health: Too much change could be seen in some camps as a betrayal of the socialist contract. Too little may not ease the burden on a strained economy, said Sergio Diaz-Briquets, a U.S.-based demographer and author of "The Health Revolution in Cuba.

"It is maybe a universal phenomenon that health care systems are expensive," he said, "but Cuba perhaps cannot afford to have the kind of services that they claim to have had in the past."

Business Consulting | The first and most obvious reason is that this ...

Courier and delivery companies such as Federal Express and UPS have for decades, and yet it seems that customers much better than the larger companies comply with smaller local companies. There are many reasons for this, and many reasons why you should be a local courier service in contrast to a national giant.

Why would one of the larger established companies such as Federal Express or UPS a smaller independent courier about? Although the larger firms are more established many disadvantages do not have the smaller companies, and most people choose a smaller local courier service of the larger firms.

The first and most obvious reason is because these local courier companies are usually independently owned and operated you actually support your local economy by the business with them. Why feed a huge company money if an equal, if not better a local company can do job?

Another reason to go with a smaller local company instead of the alternative is much better than a staff employed the routes are local delivery companies typically local drivers who know, because local workers down to ride these very same lines, make them at home. In addition, a local Messenger would know which streets are employed, which time and can usually find alternative routes for data traffic. Of course, the most obvious factor when choosing a local courier service in contrast to the larger national companies is the cost of the actual courier. Because much less than the operating costs of a huge group of companies will be operating from a local courier these savings generally to the client are passed. Instead of paying plane fuel costs and operational accounting, the local company only for ground pays wages vehicle fuel costs and drivers. If you for same day courier or a direct Messenger service then look for the obvious choice would be a locally-owned courier company, located one near by or around the place of supply.

PFT: Stafford hurts hand? |? Raiders' Pryor runs wild

doty-nfl

After a bailiff cries ?all rise? and Judge David S. Doty strolls, marches, and/or glides into his Minneapolis courtroom the morning after the Giants host the Cowboys in the first game of the regular season, the NFL and NFLPA will get their first glimpse into the predispositions of the jurist who?ll decide whether or not the union?s surprising claim of a ?secret salary cap? in 2010 may proceed.

It was a surprise because the claim came well after 2010 ended, and after the new CBA presumably wiped the slate clean between the league and the players, erasing all pending legal issues including any collusion claims that could have been made based on actual or perceived restraints on spending in a year that was supposed to have none.? (Technically, the labor deal imposed a handful of limits in 2010, such as restrictions on the free-agent signings by the teams finishing in the final eight from 2009.)

It was a surprise also because the NFLPA had signed off on cap penalties imposed on the Cowboys and Redskins, penalties which revealed that the two teams were being punished because they didn?t comply with the ?spirit? of a salary cap that didn?t exist.? The union agreed with the penalties because the union desperately needed the NFL likewise to agree to a number-fudging that would allow the NFLPA to avoid the kind of reduction in the salary cap from 2011 to 2012 that would have been awkward, to say the least, as executive director DeMaurice Smith?s re-election approached.

Now that the billable hours have hit the fan, Judge Doty will have to decide whether he?s more persuaded by technicality, or by equity.

As framed by the NFLPA in its final written submission, a copy of which PFT has obtained, the players claim that the NFL didn?t do enough to engineer a release and waiver of claims for past collusion when the new CBA was finalized and all pending litigation was concluded in 2011.? Apart from whether the documents drafted by the parties contained the right magic words to make the claims for collusion in 2010 disappear, the NFLPA has advanced an intriguing argument based on the nature of class actions.? (Try to stay awake on this, please.? If it helps, the link on ?magic words? goes to a Bugs Bunny cartoon.)

The union smartly argues that claims made on behalf of a class of litigants can be extinguished by court order only.? And so the union claims that, by not ensuring that Judge Doty would officially wipe out the collusion claims, the collusion claims weren?t wiped out.

If Judge Doty agrees, it will mean that the league?s lawyers screwed up.

Balanced against that technical application of the rules is fairness and common sense.? Regardless of the specific words or procedures used by the parties, the idea was to hit the reset button on all legal issues between the parties.? The league made concessions and the players made concessions and now the players are trying to avoid one of the concessions they made.? Some judges would decide, quickly, that such an outcome simply isn?t fair.

Compounding the potential for a finding that the NFLPA is pushing for a fundamentally unfair outcome is the fact that the players gladly signed off on cap penalties that necessarily exposed the existence of collusion in 2010 in order to get something the NFLPA needed ? a higher salary cap in 2012.? It?s unseemly, to say the least, for the NFLPA to now try to use that which it gave up to get a high cap number as the basis for seeking billions in collusion damages for allegedly depressed spending in 2010, especially since it should have been obvious to anyone paying attention that something fishy was going on.

Did the NFL engage in collusion in 2010?? Yes, in our opinion.? Should the NFLPA has done something about it in 2010?? Yes, in our opinion.? Is there something that doesn?t feel right about the NFLPA agreeing to the cap penalties that made the collusion crystal clear and then suing for collusion?? Absolutely.

But what we/I/anyone else thinks doesn?t matter.? Judge Doty will provide the first official word on the issue.? And if Doty agrees that the collusion case may proceed, look for the NFL try to appeal that decision immdiately, arguing that if the next level in the federal court system sees it the NFL?s way, there?s no reason to spend the time and money associated with developing the evidence that would prove collusion.

Even though that evidence should be fairly easy to find.

Rental Properties in Riverside, CA

Rent Sense: Rental Ownership is a Unique Business
By Neil Fjellestad & Chris De Marcos
FBS Property Management

We have built a healthy San Diego business out of advising independent real estate investors, acquiring and managing rental properties for clients while providing superior housing alternatives for qualified renters. Our business of four decades provides us a practical snapshot of the local economy.

So, what does our experience tell us about the unique rental housing business in San Diego? Here are some highlights that have remained pretty constant over the last year or so -

? With rare exception our renters pay on time every month.? Rent payment has taken its appropriate place as a financial priority as it is clearly their largest household expense.

? Renters want to pay their rent online. They want the privacy, security and convenience of this method. Since providing our renters with this alternative they pay sooner and avoid additional late charges.

? Most of our rental owners are responsive to capital requirements to improve their properties though often forced to defer or accomplish in stages due to personal financial constraints. This is an excellent time to get improvements done on time and for less.

? Our rental owners can?t afford to allow a non-paying renter and they can?t abide extended vacancy. The number of days rented is more important than the rate so a year?s lease is normally required while a substantial premium is required for a month-to-month alternative.

? Most of our clients that are involved with either selling or re-financing become extremely frustrated with the lack of expected results and/or the extension of the time to accomplish.

? The cost and time to accomplish daily routines that require permission and/or cooperation with governmental agencies and public authorities continues to grow and frustrate due to cutbacks in most departments.

? We can see from the employment information provided by renewing and potential renters that most of the jobs lost over the last 3-4 years are gone. Employers have determined other ways to accomplish or greater productivity just requires fewer to get the job done. Other jobs are being created but with different requirements and rewards.

? Small businesses like ours will hire and/or expand cautiously when and if they can control risks (the cost of doing business) while believing that the benefits of growth outweigh the alternatives.

National Disability Insurance Scheme Petition - See Through My ...

To the Australians - you have probably heard the debate about the National Disability Insurance Scheme in the media. I will admit I didn't really think much of it as I hate politics and I didn't really know what it would mean for me being vision impaired.

Guide Dogs have started a campaign to ensure that people?who are blind and have vision impairments are not forgotten. As I have previously mentioned, I had help from Guide Dogs with mobility and getting a cane. This was a free service and they came to me. It was so beneficial even though I still have some sight, and the Guide Dogs people were so lovely and supportive and put me in touch with other organizations and people that could help. Which is why I strongly support taking part in this campaign as to keep the support and funding for Guide Dogs to make their wonderful services easily accessible to everybody.
