Silicon Image pushes new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) 2.0 chips with 1080p60 video, faster charging

After taking a few years to get off of the ground, MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) technology is now found in many modern phones as well as HDTVs from LG, Toshiba and Samsung. Now, Silicon Image has announced its second generation of chips to go in those devices with enhanced features. MHL if you'll recall, lets mobile devices connect to HDTVs via HDMI, while passing power and control signals along with the video. According to Silicon Image its new chips, the SiI8240 MHL transmitter (for phones, tablets, cameras and laptops) and SiI9617 MHL Bridge (for HDTVs, monitors and projectors) and dual-mode IP core (like the one in Samsung's Galaxy S II) upgrade the previous generation's capabilities with the ability to pass 1080p video at 60Hz (up from 30Hz) and charge up to twice as fast. There's a few more details in the press releases after the break, if you're wondering whether or not your phone / HDTV is down with MHL then check the specs or hit the Wikipedia link below.

Heat resting up before return to East finals

MIAMI (AP) ? Dwyane Wade has been battling knee soreness. LeBron James was hobbling after a falling into a courtside cameraman. Chris Bosh remains sidelined indefinitely with an abdominal strain. Mike Miller looks to be in agony whenever he moves.

An extra day of rest doesn't sound like much, but it means plenty right now to the Miami Heat.

Now halfway to their goal of an NBA championship, the Heat took a welcomed ? and needed ? day off Friday after closing out their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup with the Indiana Pacers.

The East finals open Monday in Miami against either Philadelphia or Boston, teams that will settle their second-round series with a Game 7 on Saturday night.

"We can use it," James said after the Heat ousted the Pacers with a Game 6 win in Indianapolis on Thursday. "Any team in the postseason, any extra day that you can get, it definitely helps us. So we're going to take advantage of it."

It's not like the Heat were planning to sit at home all day, since most players at this time of year tend to hit the training room on off days. Still, for the first time in a while, Friday provided a chance for the reigning East champs to relax a bit, especially after three hard-fought wins in five days allowed Miami to claw back from what was a soon-forgotten 2-1 series deficit to the Pacers.

Wade and James combined to score 197 points in the final three games of the Indiana series, while the Pacers' starters collectively managed 184. Other Heat players stepped up along the way ? Udonis Haslem with 14 points in Game 4, Shane Battier with 13 in Game 5, Miller with 12 in Game 6 ? but with Bosh sidelined, it was Wade and James who welcomed the challenge of having to handle much of the offensive responsibility.

"I don't know if they've been required to shoulder as much responsibility as they've had to now, particularly now that Chris is out," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "And we're making no excuses. We have enough. But they have to give us more and that's what competition will do. You play against good competition in this league and it brings out the best in you ? you hope."

Bosh told ESPN.com this week that he is improving, but stopped short of offering a date for his possible return.

He was hurt midway through Game 1 of the Indiana series, meaning nearly two full weeks have passed since he was diagnosed with a strained lower abdominal muscle. The best-case scenario for recovery for someone with that type of injury is typically 2-3 weeks, though the Heat have never deviated from saying Bosh is out indefinitely.

"I appreciate extra rest," Wade said. "I'm never going to cross my eye on that at all. I feel like it's well-deserved. I think also it gives us an opportunity to get Chris more therapy, more treatment the days that we're off and he moves that much closer to being able to rejoin this ballclub. I thought this was a very physical series ... so the rest will do us some (good)."

The Pacers probably would suggest Wade couldn't get much better than he was in the last 10 quarters of their series.

Wade was awful ? 2 for 13 shooting, five points, five turnovers ? in Game 3, an Indiana blowout that many thought put the Pacers in control of the series. He started Game 4 by missing seven of his first eight shots. And from there, the 2006 finals MVP was in 2006 finals MVP form again: Wade shot 39 for 57 the rest of the series, putting up 41 points and 10 rebounds in Thursday's clincher.

Since 1992, according to STATS LLC, there's been 52 instances of someone having at least 40 points and 10 rebounds in a playoff game. Of those, 50 came from players listed to be at least 6-foot-6. The other two are by Wade, perhaps generously listed at 6-foot-4.

"Spectacular, from the beginning to the end," James said of Wade's Game 6 effort. "He got in a rhythm early and just kept going."

James missed a layup with 1:34 left in the first half on Thursday, his left leg crashing into a television cameraman sitting just beyond the baseline. He was shaken up and briefly tended to on the Heat bench, but played all but 28 seconds of the second half and insisted he was fine afterward. And Miller ? who has dealt with several injuries in his two Miami seasons ? makes running jokes about his health, not even acknowledging things hurt even though he's taken to sitting on the floor during games of late to help stretch his back.

Miller had 10 points in the first five games of the series. His 12 on Thursday came on four 3-pointers, his specialty.

"It's all about opportunity," Miller said. "That's what this team has right now, opportunity."

The way they all see it, the job is only half done. Miami has eight postseason wins. It takes 16 to win an NBA title. So even though some aches and pains are there, it doesn't change the goal.

"It's a no-excuse season," Spoelstra said, a familiar refrain for him in recent weeks. "And this is a no-excuse team."

Thousands gather for world's largest solar eclipse party (+video)

Solar eclipse party: Even a partial eclipse was enough to draw thousands to Folsom Field in Colorado to see the moon take a bite from the sun.

Observers gaze up at the annular solar eclipse on May 20, 2012 at a special event held at the University of Colorado's Folsom Field football stadium in Boulder, Colo.

Thousands of people turned their eyes to the sky at the University of Colorado's Folsom Field football stadium here Sunday (May 20) to watch the moon slip in front of the sun to create a spectacular "crescent sun."

The partial eclipse in Colorado occurred during a rare?annular solar eclipse, in which the moon passed in front of ? but did not completely obscure ? the sun. In parts of China, Japan and eight western states, the celestial show created a dazzling "ring of fire" effect, while wide swathes of the U.S., including Colorado, saw a partial solar eclipse.

But even a partial eclipse was enough to draw a crowd of thousands to Folsom Field to see the moon take a bite from the sun. The organizers had billed the event as the?world's largest solar eclipse viewing party.

At times, clouds periodically obscured the eclipsed sun, eliciting boos from the crowd. But when the clouds parted at 7:13 p.m. MDT (9:13 p.m. EDT/0113 GMT) several minutes before the maximum eclipse, it left some in the stadium speechless. [First Photos of May 20 Solar Eclipse]

"I can't think of words," said Bryce Pantoja, 15, who came with his family from the nearby city of Castle Rock to view the solar eclipse.

Astronomer Douglas Duncan, the director of the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado, Boulder, arranged the eclipse-viewing event, mobilizing thousands of specialized solar-viewing glasses for the occasion. About 50,000 pairs ofsolar eclipse glasses?were sold or given to schoolchildren in the days before the event, Duncan told SPACE.com.

Olympic torchbearers race to cash in

Tal Cohen / EPA

Triple Olympic gold medal-winning sailor Ben Ainslie carries the flame as the first torchbearer of the torch relay around Britain on Saturday.

By Duncan Golestani, NBC News

LONDON -- The sweatsuit comes off and the business hat goes on when it comes to many of those participating in the Olympic torch relay.?

The historic ritual only started Saturday, but by Sunday there were already at least eight torches?being auctioned on eBay with offers in excess of $170,000, although perhaps not all the bids were genuine.?

One volunteer is yet to get hold of the torch but has already put his up for sale.?

When the Olympics is your neighbor

At this rate we can expect plenty more. Eight thousand bearers are taking part in the relay as the flame travels 8,000 miles around Great Britain. Volunteers are allowed to keep their torch if they pay $340. This is where some have spotted the value ? the torches cost $780 to produce, the Olympic organizers having paid the difference.?

So what do you get for your money? The torches are made of aluminum alloy with a gold effect giving them that all-important shimmer.?

Hand-welded, they have 8,000 holes.? But, at 31 inches it?s a little long for some mantelpieces.?

World's most expensive cable car might not be ready for Olympics

Andrew Bell was among those deciding to sell, according to the Sun on Sunday newspaper.

?I understand some people may find the idea of selling an Olympic torch offensive,? the 31-year-old from Cornwall, who was among the first carriers, told the paper.?

?But we could genuinely use the money,? he added, according to the newspaper.?

?A spokeswoman for LOCOG, the Olympic organizing committee, seemed relaxed about the moneymaking scheme.

??They are the torchbearers? property.? She told NBC News. ?We just hope they go to a good home.?

?So it seems the Olympics and commercialism go hand-in-hand.

Jenna Talackova Falls Short of Miss Universe Canada Crown, Named Miss Congeniality

Transgender Canadian beauty queen Jenna Talackova turned heads in a bikini and placed in the top 12 at the Miss Universe Canada pageant this weekend.

The 6-foot-1 blonde bombshell was a crowd favorite, even though she fell short of the Miss Canada crown and entry into the Miss Universe competition.

Born Walter Talackova, Jenna also seemed to be a favorite among her fellow contestants and was one of four women voted “Miss Congeniality.”

The 23-year-old was originally disqualified from the competition because she was not a “naturally born female,” but ultimately allowed back in.

After threats of a lawsuit and public outcry, the Trump Organization, which owns the contest, announced Talackova would be allowed to compete.

“I didn’t know that there would be this much controversy. I was just entering because, you know, I wanted to represent Canada," Talackova said.

Adding that she was born in the wrong body, Jenna added, "I think I’m a beautiful woman, inside and out. I think I would have done the job.”

Gotta give her credit for trying and conducting herself with class. Take a look at some photos of Jenna modeling at the Miss Canada pageant below:

7 charged with terror crimes in Real IRA crackdown

(AP) ? Seven Irish republicans, including three relatives of a senior reputed Real IRA member and four others allegedly operating a forest rifle range, were arraigned Saturday on terror charges following a security sweep against militants plotting to sabotage Northern Ireland's peace process.

Three were charged with "directing terror," a crime never before levied against a suspected Irish Republican Army member in Northern Ireland. Use of the charge suggests that police and Britain's domestic spy agency, MI5, believe they have caught senior members of the Real IRA faction and will present evidence from electronic surveillance and informers, typically the only means to convict senior figures.

Three relatives of Colin Duffy, a reputed senior Real IRA figure, appeared in a courtroom southwest of Belfast surrounded by police officers in full riot gear. None offered pleas and all were ordered held without bail until their next court appearance June 8.

Duffy's brothers, Paul, 47, and Damien, 42, and cousin Shane Duffy, 41, all were charged with four counts of preparing acts of terrorism, conspiring to murder and conspiring to cause explosions. Paul Duffy also was charged with directing terrorism.

Colin Duffy, who wasn't charged as part of the latest sweep, was acquitted in January of murdering two off-duty British soldiers. He joined relatives and friends in the courtroom's public gallery and cheered supportively as the three men were led away in handcuffs.

And in Omagh, the Northern Ireland town where the Real IRA committed the single deadliest bombing of the entire four-decade conflict, a woman and three men were arraigned on charges of preparing acts of terrorism, possessing a rifle and ammunition, and attending a Real IRA training camp in secluded woods near Omagh.

Two of those charged, 37-year-old Sharon Rafferty and 46-year-old Sean Kelly, also were charged with directing terror. All four were ordered held without bail until their next court date Tuesday.

The Real IRA killed 29 people, mostly women and children, in an Aug. 15, 1998, car-bomb attack on the center of Omagh. The group laid low for nearly a decade but in 2007 resumed attacks, chiefly against police and their civilian supporters.

Policemen testified that they had audio recordings of Rafferty and Kelly discussing how to target police officers, acquiring guns, running firearms training and financing Real IRA operations. Kelly is a former convicted member of the Provisional IRA, the dominant faction that renounced violence and disarmed in 2005.

All four allegedly were seen leaving a Real IRA firearms-training session in March, and police said they recovered both DNA evidence and about 200 casings of spent bullets from the scene. Police said they had found a rifle, terrorist-style masks, rubber gloves and four sets of waterproof clothing at the home of another man facing charges, Gavin Coney.

Northern Ireland authorities created the offense of "directing terror" in 1994 as a way to convict previously untouchable commanders of paramilitary groups, who typically didn't directly participate in attacks, but the new charge has been applied only once before: to convict Johnny "Mad Dog" Adair, a notorious Belfast militant from the British Protestant side of the community, in 1995. Adair had been tape-recorded bragging to undercover policemen about his murderous exploits against the IRA's host Catholic community.

Authorities in the neighboring Republic of Ireland also introduced the "directing terror" charge in 1998 following the Omagh bomb atrocity, but it too has been used just once: to convict the founder and original senior commander of the Real IRA, Michael McKevitt. Proving that case required use of an American double agent recruited by the FBI and MI5 to befriend McKevitt.

Police braced for potential trouble Saturday in the Duffys' power base of Lurgan, a religiously polarized town southwest of Belfast. Typically Real IRA members and supporters have mounted car hijackings and bomb threats whenever Colin Duffy or his relatives have faced legal action.

In the first sign of such trouble within an hour of the Duffys' court appearance, police said they discovered a possible bomb at a roadside in the Belfast suburb of Dunmurry, evacuated several nearby homes, and deployed British Army bomb engineers to the scene.

Protesters stream into Chicago park for NATO march

CHICAGO (AP) ? A diverse crowd of protesters began streaming into a downtown Chicago park Sunday for one of the city's largest demonstrations in years ? a march to the lakeside convention center hosting a historic NATO summit.

Peace activists joined with war veterans and people more focused on the economy for the protest, which was expected to draw thousands of participants. Marchers arrived at Grant Park with signs denouncing NATO, including ones that read: "War(equals)Debt" and "NATO, Go Home."

They planned to walk 2? miles to the site where President Barack Obama and other world leaders were meeting to discuss the war in Afghanistan, European missile defense and other issues.

"I'll be walking all day and guiding all day, trying to keep tempers calm," said Sue Eleuterio of Highland, Ind., a longtime activist who plans to act as a "peace guide" by mediating problems between police and protesters. "Our goal, believe it or not, is to have a family friendly protest that is peaceful."

Organizers of Sunday's rally had initially predicted tens of thousands of protesters this weekend. But that was when the G-8 summit of leading industrial nations was also scheduled to be in Chicago. Earlier this year, Obama moved the Group of 8 economic meeting to Camp David, the secluded retreat in rural Maryland.

Chicago kept the NATO summit, which focuses on international security matters but not the economy. That left activists with the challenge of persuading groups as diverse as teachers, nurses and union laborers to show up for the Chicago protests even though the summit's main focus doesn't align with their most heart-felt issues.

"I'm here to protest NATO, which I feel is the enforcement arm of the ruling 1 percent ? of the capitalist 1 percent," said protester John Schraufnagel, who took a bus from Minneapolis to Chicago.

Sunday's protest followed several smaller demonstrations over the previous two days, including a march Saturday to the home of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff.

Later that evening, hundreds of demonstrators zigzagged through downtown, some decrying terrorism-related charges leveled against three young men earlier in the day.

Increasingly tense clashes Saturday night tested police who used bicycles to barricade off streets and horseback officers to coax them in different directions. Eighteen people were arrested.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said officers would be ready with quick but targeted arrests of any demonstrators who turn violent Sunday.

"If anything else happens, the plan is to go in and get the people who create the violent acts, take them out of the crowd and arrest them," warned McCarthy. "We're not going to charge the crowd wholesale ? that's the bottom line."

Security has been tight throughout the city. As police gathered en masse on street corners, near parks and landmarks, the city's streets remained largely vacant and many downtown buildings closed.

"It's strange because downtown is empty," said Gabe Labovitz, an economist out for a walk near his home. "The police presence is reassuring but unnerving."

Three activists who traveled to Chicago for the summit were accused Saturday of manufacturing Molotov cocktails in a plot to attack Obama's campaign headquarters, Emanuel's home and other targets.

Defense lawyers argued that the police had trumped up the charges to frighten away peaceful protesters. They told a judge it was undercover officers who brought the firebombs to an apartment in Chicago's South Side where the men were arrested.

On Sunday, police said two other men were in custody after being accused of planning to make Molotov cocktails to be used during the NATO summit.

Sebastian Senakiewicz, 24, was charged with one felony count of terrorism/making a false threat. Mark Neiweem, 28, was charged with attempted possession of explosives. Both men were scheduled to appear in court later Sunday.

It was not immediately clear if those arrests were related to the other three.

Kris Hermes of the National Lawyers Guild said the charges seem to be part of a wider effort to scare people and diminish the size of the demonstrations.

Pennsylvania Doctors Worry Over Fracking 'Gag Rule'

Explore key components of the natural gas production process ? and the questions scientists are asking.

From WHYY

A new law in Pennsylvania has doctors nervous.

The law grants physicians access to information about trade-secret chemicals used in natural gas drilling. Doctors say they need to know what's in those formulas in order to treat patients who may have been exposed to the chemicals.

But the new law also says that doctors can't tell anyone else ? not even other doctors ? what's in those formulas. It's being called the "doctor gag rule."

'I Don't Know If It's Due To Exposure'

Plastic surgeon Amy Pare practices in suburban Pittsburgh where she does reconstructive surgeries and deals with a lot of skin issues. She tells me about one case, a family who brought in a boy with strange skin lesions.

"Their son is quite ill ? has had lethargy, nosebleeds," Pare says. "He's had liver damage. I don't know if it's due to exposure."

The family lived near natural gas drilling activity, and there was some concern that the boy may have been exposed to some of the chemicals being used. Producing natural gas is a pretty industrial process and gives off a lot of fumes. It uses a lot of chemicals to open wells to get the gas flowing.

Pare's first step was to figure out what chemicals the drillers were using. But that information isn't easy to get. In this case, Pare says, the patient's family had a good lawyer who helped them find out what kind of chemicals the gas company was using.

"If I don't know what [patients] have been exposed to, how do I find the antidote? We're definitely not clairvoyant," she says.

Revealing Trade Secrets ... Sort Of

Pennsylvania's new law was supposed to make things easier for doctors and patients. The law, which is similar to those in Texas and Colorado, requires drillers to list the chemicals used to produce oil or gas on a public website that doctors like Pare can access.

But the website doesn't list all the chemicals used; it leaves off those considered to be trade secrets. These are ingredients that a company says it has to keep secret in order to maintain an edge over its competitors. Before the law, doctors couldn't find out what those trade-secret chemicals were. Now, they can.

But there's a catch: Doctors can get the chemical names only if they sign a confidentiality agreement and agree not to share that information. That's a move that makes doctors like Pare nervous.

"As I understand it, it's legally binding, so if 20 years from now I hiccup that someone was exposed to zippity doo dah, I'm legally liable for that," she says.

It's not even clear whether the doctor can share the trade-secret ingredient with the patient or the patient's neighbors, co-workers or primary care doctor.

'A Mountain Out Of A Molehill'?

Ever since the law was signed earlier this year, doctors have been asking lots of questions. But authors of the law say doctors are overreacting.

"It's not to discredit those who are sincerely looking out for the health of others, but I think a mountain has been made out of a molehill," says Drew Crompton, a legislative staffer and one of the primary drafters of the law. "It's important to have disclosure, and that's what we tried to do. And I think this is coming from people who oppose the industry."

The law was modeled after a Colorado initiative, which was modeled after a federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulation. At a recent talk for local officials, Michael Krancer, the head of Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection, defended what some are calling the "doctor gag rule."

"The 'gag order on physicians' ? nothing could be further from the truth or more nonsensical than this," Krancer said. "The provisions of Act 13 are exactly like what we have already and had had in the federal system since the '70s. There's nothing new there."

But there are some differences. The federal law was designed for workers, while the new state laws cover everyone. And critics say some important parts of the federal law are missing in these state laws.

Balancing Trade Secrets And Public Health

Barry Furrow, the director of the health law program at Drexel University in Philadelphia, says writers of Pennsylvania's law made it vague.

"They've lacked definition. They haven't defined the boundaries of disclosure, so doctors are properly nervous," Furrow says. "What can they disclose to the state? What can they disclose to the community? It's just the patient and the doctor only. And this is a public health problem with toxic chemicals. It's much larger than one patient. It's going to be a community."

Pennsylvania's Department of Public Health recently issued a statement assuring doctors that they would be able to share information with their patients and public health officials. But Furrow wonders how well that statement would hold up in court.

"If Halliburton decides to sue a doctor, that's quite terrifying," he says. "You have a very large, probably rather aggressive company, given its history."

Howard Frumkin, dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, is an expert in treating workers who have been exposed to chemicals on the job.

"In more than two decades of practicing occupational medicine, I'll tell you how often I was able to make the right diagnosis and plan the right treatment when I didn't know what the patients were exposed to ? zero times," he says.

Frumkin says companies have a legitimate right to protect trade secrets. But he says there is also a legitimate public need to know about what they may have been exposed to.

"You need to balance off those two rights," he says. "In this case, it seems the law tried to make the balance but didn't quite get it right. There are very chilling statements there that would inhibit physicians and public health officials from getting information that they need."

Some Pennsylvania lawmakers are responding to doctors' confusion. A bill has been introduced to remove the need for doctors to agree to a confidentiality agreement.
