Many in the Burner community know Ryan Keesling through his sound endeavors
as Searchl1te on Part Time Suckers and BMIR. ?On Thursday, November 8th,
we?ll have a privilege of hearing Ryan speak about an incredible project he
works with in Chicago called the Free Write Jails Arts & Literacy Program.
Following a brief history of the juvenile court, which was founded in Cook
County, Illinois, Ryan will discuss the ?School-To-Prison Pipeline.? We?ll
look at the concept, implications, and activism that is happening around
the School-To-Prison Pipeline.
Ryan will then introduce the poetry and artwork created by the incarcerated
youth who participate in Free Write. As we interact with the student work,
we?ll discuss how literacy and creative self-expression are used as tools
by our incarcerated students to overcome the weighty obstacles each of them
face. It?s a truly inspiring and humbling project and we are thrilled to
have Ryan present, so we really hope you?ll join us for his call!
